I believe in the power of people and design-driven innovation to navigate the now and purposefully evolve into the future. I serve as the Associate Director of the Design Lab at UC San Diego under the direction of the legendary Don Norman. We focus on people-centered design as a way of thinking and operating, specifically as it pertains to how people interact with complex systems and technology. We prioritize a systems-approach, the identification of root issues, consideration of inclusive, ethical responses and the business value of design.
I am also the co-founder of San Diego’s Design Forward Alliance, co-founder of The Center for Design-Driven Transformation with UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management, and principal consultant for HardPoint Solutions. I come to design as an investigator with experience as a journalist, over a decade in the U.S. Secret Service, and simultaneous Fellowships at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School’s Center for Negotiation and International Conflict.
Well-versed in a broad spectrum of design craft and strategy, service design is at the core of my work and teaching. Relevant client work includes IBM, SAP, Sony, to highly regulated environments like the Port of San Diego, the San Diego County Office of Education, the City of San Diego, federal law enforcement, and the U.S. Military, to rapidly scaling businesses like ViaSat, recently named to Fortune’s 2019 Change the World list.
